Stewarding Our Calling Well and Creating Margin | E74

There’s a kind of busy that looks responsible on the outside but feels heavy on the inside.

You’re showing up. You’re getting things done. You’re carrying what’s been entrusted to you. But somewhere along the way, your days started to feel crowded instead of purposeful.

This is a conversation about that tension. About learning how to steward your time in a way that creates space, not pressure, and making room again for God to lead instead of trying to hold everything together on your own.

If you’ve been feeling stretched thin or constantly behind, like no matter how much you do there’s always something else waiting, I want you to know you’re not alone in that. It is so easy to fill our days with good things and still end up feeling weary, disconnected, or even a little resentful underneath the surface.

Maybe you’ve felt that tension of wanting to be faithful with what’s in front of you, but also sensing that something is off. Like you’re moving so quickly that you haven’t had the space to pause and ask God what He actually wants from you in this season.

This episode is an invitation to come back to that place. To slow down enough to notice. To gently ask where your time has been going and whether your current rhythms are leaving room for God to move, speak, and redirect.

You don’t have to overhaul everything overnight. But you do get to start paying attention again.

What you can learn in today’s episode:

  • Why a full schedule can quietly lead to burnout and frustration

  • How to recognize when you’re treating your calling like a hobby

  • What Scripture teaches us about creating margin in our lives

  • Why being interruptible matters more than you think

  • Practical ways to steward your time with intention and trust

How to Steward Your Time and Create Margin

Have you ever looked at your schedule and wondered how it got so full?

Not just busy but packed to the point where even a small interruption feels frustrating. Where your days move quickly, but your heart still feels unsettled.

In this episode of The Vessels Podcast, Courtney shares a personal and honest look at what happens when we fill our lives too full. She opens up about burnout, control, and the quiet ways we begin to push God out of our rhythms without even realizing it.

This is not about doing less just for the sake of it. It is about creating space for what matters most.

When Full Schedules Leave No Room for God

Many of us carry full calendars because we care deeply. We want to be responsible. We want to be obedient. We want to do what God has called us to do.

But somewhere along the way, good intentions can turn into overcommitment.

Courtney shares how she found herself saying yes to too many projects, especially in her business. What started as diligence slowly turned into burnout. And underneath it all was a deeper issue. A quiet belief that everything depended on her.

When our schedules are packed, it can signal something deeper. It can reveal a need for control.

And the hard truth is this. When we try to control everything, we often leave no room for God to move.

Your Calling Is Not a Hobby

One of the most powerful reminders in this conversation is simple, but convicting.

Your calling is not a hobby.

There are things God has placed on your heart that may not produce income. They may not look practical or urgent compared to your daily responsibilities. But that does not make them optional.

Courtney shares how she unintentionally treated parts of her calling like they were secondary because they were not tied to income. Writing, speaking, and podcasting were pushed aside in favor of what felt more “productive.”

But obedience is not measured by what pays the bills.

God is not looking at your output the way the world does. He is looking at your willingness to show up and steward what He has given you.

Why Margin Matters More Than You Think

Margin is not wasted space. It is intentional space.

Without margin, everything feels urgent. Every interruption feels like a problem. And even small inconveniences can lead to frustration.

Courtney describes how living without margin led to feelings of resentment. Simple things like a slow checkout line or an unexpected phone call started to feel overwhelming. Not because those things were big, but because there was no space to absorb them.

When we live this way, we are not just tired. We are unavailable.

Unavailable to people.
Unavailable to rest.
And often, unavailable to God.

Scripture gives us a clear picture of margin. In Leviticus, farmers were instructed not to harvest to the very edges of their fields. They were to leave some behind.

Not because they were careless, but because they were obedient.

That same principle applies to our lives. We are not meant to fill every edge of our schedules.

Learning to Be Interruptible

One of the most beautiful examples Courtney shares comes from the life of Jesus.

In the story of the woman who had been bleeding for twelve years, Jesus was on His way to heal someone else. It was urgent. It mattered.

And yet, He stopped.

He noticed her. He spoke to her. He made space in the moment.

Jesus was never rushed. He was never too busy to notice people.

That kind of posture requires margin.

When our lives are too full, we lose our ability to be interruptible. We miss the small, meaningful moments that God places right in front of us.

What if the interruptions we resist are actually invitations?

Are You Reaping to the Edges of Your Life?

It is easy to justify a full life. Especially when we believe we are doing it for the right reasons.

But there is a difference between being faithful and being overextended.

Courtney invites us to ask a few honest questions:

Where do you feel rushed?
Where do you feel stretched too thin?
What have you said yes to that may not be your best yes?

Sometimes the issue is not that we are doing the wrong things. It is that we are doing too many things.

And when everything is full, there is no space left to respond to God.

Practical Ways to Create Margin

Creating margin does not require a complete life overhaul overnight. It starts with awareness and small, intentional shifts.

This might look like:

  • Leaving space between meetings or commitments

  • Saying no to opportunities that are not aligned with your current season

  • Creating unhurried time with the Lord in the morning or evening

  • Allowing extra time in your day so you are not constantly rushing

  • Letting go of the belief that everything depends on you

Margin is built one decision at a time.

And often, it begins with trusting that God can do more with your obedience than you can with your effort.
